San Isidro Festivities 2024

The San Isidro Festivities are held to commemorate the patron saint of Madrid, Isidro Labrador (Isidore the Farmer). A wide range of shows all over Madrid, such as concerts, dances and fireworks, will captivate everyone. In addition, gastronomy is also a major part of these festivities, with the typical "rosquillas tontas", "rosquillas listas", "rosquillas de Santa Clara" and "rosquillas francesas". It is also very common to eat "gallinejas" and "entresijos", the popular "bocadillos de calamares" (squid sandwiches), and to accompany all this with a refreshing lemonade.

During the San Isidro festivities, it is typical to dress in the "chulapo" costume, which usually includes a manila shawl and a red carnation, or a black or checkered cap and a waistcoat or short jacket.

Naturally, we must not forget the most traditional dance during these festivities: The "chotis". This dance consists of simple steps and is easy to learn. Although it is said to have originated in the Czech Republic, over time, it has spread to various countries and has become an emblem of Madrid to this day.

As a final curiosity, many of the events during the San Isidro Festivities are related to water, as it is said that Isidro Labrador had the gift of finding water. This tradition is behind the "Blessing the Water of the Fountain" ceremony and the consecration to the saint, among others.
