The Best Free Things to Do in Madrid
Enjoying Madrid without spending money is easier than it seems. The capital is full of life, culture, and places to discover. Parks, viewpoints, entertainment, culture, and even museums with free admission on certain dates. Here are some ideas for enjoying Madrid on a zero budget.
If you're looking to unwind in nature
Madrid has plenty of green spaces where you can escape the pace of the city, take a relaxed stroll, or enjoy great views. Here are two suggestions:
- Retiro Park: A stroll through El Retiro is a must-do plan: you can wander its gardens, visit the Rosaleda rose garden, head over to the lake, or discover some of its most curious corners, like the garden where peacocks often roam. If you're traveling with kids, you'll also find free puppet shows on most weekends. It's just a 20-minute walk there from our apartments.
- Cerro del Tío Pío Park: This has become one of Madrid's best free viewpoints, since the different hills offer unique panoramic views of the entire city. It's an ideal spot for watching the sunset with friends.
Experience the culture firsthand
Madrid is also a perfect destination for art and culture lovers. If you're looking for free museums in Madrid, some of the capital's most important ones offer free admission on certain days and times, an ideal chance to discover great works of art. Take note!
- Museo del Prado: Monday to Saturday from 6 to 8 pm, and Sundays and public holidays from 5 to 7 pm.
- Museo Reina Sofía: Mondays and Wednesday to Saturday from 7 to 9 pm, and Sundays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.
- Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza: Mondays from 12 to 4 pm for the permanent collection.
Before planning your visit, we recommend checking the specific hours and conditions on each museum's official website.
Buildings and sights you can't miss
